Pigs are farm animals that people have kept for thousands of years, mostly for meat and also because they will eat almost anything and turn it into something useful. A grown pig can weigh several hundred pounds, and a baby pig — a piglet — is born already able to walk. Children meet pigs on farm visits, in picture books, and as the letter P animal, which makes a pig page one of the easiest to sit down with. The colour is more open than people think. Many pigs are pink, but real pigs also come in black, brown, ginger, spotted black-and-white, and the rusty red of a Tamworth. There is no single "right" pig, so children can copy a farm pig they know or invent a rainbow one. Point out the snout, the inner ears, and the curly tail — those three shapes are the ones most children enjoy picking out in a slightly different shade. The eight designs get steadily harder. After that the drawings add a bit more: a playful pig on its back with all four legs in the air, a close-up smiling face with eyelashes, a pig trotting along with its mouth open, and a round pot-bellied pig standing in profile for children who like a longer, careful page. Every sheet prints on landscape US Letter paper at 200 DPI, so the pig fills the page without being cut off. Plain copier paper is fine for crayons and colored pencils. If you are using markers or paint, slightly thicker card stock stops the colour bleeding through. In the classroom these pages pair well with a lesson on farm animals, on the letter P, or on how animals stay cool (pigs roll in mud because they cannot sweat the way people do). The sitting piglet is finished in a few minutes; the chubby standing pig can fill a quiet stretch of the afternoon. Print a few different designs and let each child pick the one that matches their patience that day. The sleeping pig also makes a good calm-down activity, and the simple sitting outline is open enough that younger children can add a mud puddle, a barn or some straw around the pig if they want to.
