An owl can turn its head about 270 degrees — almost all the way around — because its eyes cannot move in their sockets.

A baby owl is called an owlet, and it is covered in fluffy down before its flying feathers grow in.

About the owl coloring page
Owls are night-hunting birds that live in woods, barns, deserts and even cities, on every continent except Antarctica. Children notice two things first: the huge forward-facing eyes, and a head that can twist almost all the way around. Most of the designs here are the familiar woodland owl with small ear tufts, plus a barn owl with its heart-shaped face, so children can see that not every owl looks the same.
Colour is more open than it first seems. A great horned owl is mottled brown and grey, a barn owl is pale gold with a white face, and a snowy owl is almost pure white. Children can stay realistic with browns, tans and greys, or invent a rainbow owl — the big open shapes on the first few sheets take colour well either way. The face disc around the eyes is worth pointing out: on a barn owl it is a clear heart, and leaving it paler than the rest of the head makes the page look finished even with simple crayons.
The eight designs run from easiest to hardest. The round baby owlet comes first — thick outlines, huge eyes and a fluffy body, right for toddlers. Then a winking owl waving one wing, and a sleeping owl with its wings wrapped around itself, both still simple and cartoonish. The barn owl standing on two feet is the first sheet that looks like a real species. After that the detail climbs: an owl perched on a branch looking toward you, a cute owl flying with both wings fully spread, a swooping owl with talons out, and finally a great horned owl whose chest is covered in small overlapping feathers for children who like a long, careful project.
Every sheet prints on landscape US Letter paper at 200 DPI, so the owl fills the page without being cut off. Plain copier paper is fine for crayons and colored pencils. Use slightly thicker card stock for markers or paint on the last two designs, where the narrow gaps between flight feathers can bleed shut on thin paper.
In the classroom these pages pair well with a lesson on nocturnal animals, on birds of prey, on how wings work, or on the letter O. The sleeping owl is a calm quiet-time sheet; the waving owl makes a cheerful display; the detailed horned owl can fill a whole afternoon.
