This free seating chart maker turns a class list into a classroom seating chart you can print. Paste student names, one per line, choose up to 8 rows and 8 columns of desks, then fill the grid in list order or randomize seats. Empty desks stay blank when the class is smaller than the room. Click two desks to swap students, set a title, and print a clean chart for the wall or a substitute. It runs in the browser with no account, and a blank grid prints as a classroom seating chart template.
Paste a class list and seat the room
This classroom seating chart maker starts from the roster you already have. Paste student names into the box, one name per line. A column copied from a spreadsheet lands that way. Blank lines are skipped, and extra spaces around a name are trimmed.
Set Rows and Columns to the desks in the room. The chart allows up to 8 of each, which is 64 desks. Fill seats places the list from the front of the room, left to right, then back through the rows. The first name sits in row 1, seat 1. Desks left over stay empty.
If the list is longer than the room, the chart stays as it was and tells you how many desks you are short. Add a row or a column, or take names off the list, then fill again.
Build the classroom layout you actually have
Row 1 is the front, closest to the board. Columns run left to right as you face the class from the front of the room. Five rows of six is a common elementary layout: 30 desks for a class of 24, with room for a student who is out, a chair you pulled aside, or a clear path to the door.
Shrink the grid and anyone seated outside the new size leaves the chart. Their names stay in the list, so Fill seats puts the class back. Grow the grid and the new desks come in empty, in the same places you added them. That is what makes this a classroom layout maker: the desks follow the room, from a single row of partners up to an 8 by 8 block.
The title at the top defaults to Classroom Seating Chart. Change it to a period, a homeroom, or a date before you print. The title is the only heading on the printed page.
Randomize seats, then swap two desks
Randomize seats deals the same list into the same room. Each student lands in a different desk, and empty desks are mixed through the grid when the class is smaller than the room. Click Randomize seats again for a new draw.
To move one pair, click the first desk, then the second. The two names trade places. Click a student and then an empty desk to move that student and leave the first desk open. Click the selected desk again, or press Escape, to cancel. A swap stays put while you edit the list. The desks change only when you fill, randomize, or clear them.
Clear seats empties every desk and leaves the class list in place, which is useful when you want to start a new arrangement without pasting the roster again.
Print a chart for the wall or a substitute
Print opens a plain page: the title, a front-of-room label, row and seat numbers, and every desk. Empty desks print as blank boxes so the shape of the room is still visible. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF if you want a file instead of paper. The browser has to allow the pop-up window.
Tape one copy by the door and leave another in the substitute folder. A chart on paper is what a guest teacher uses to take attendance and learn names before the bell.
Click Clear seats and then Print if you want a blank classroom seating chart template. Print uses the desks on the screen, not the name box, so clear them even if you have already seated a class. The desks are drawn and the names are blank, so you can pencil students in. Set the rows and columns first so the template matches the furniture.
When teachers rebuild a seating chart
Most classrooms get a new chart at the start of a term, after a schedule change, and when a table group stops working. A random first pass is a fair way to open the year. After that, teachers edit by hand: a student who needs the board closer, a pair who work well on labs, a desk left open beside the cabinet.

How do I randomly assign seats?
Paste the class list, set the rows and columns, and click Randomize seats. Each student is placed in a random desk. If you have fewer students than desks, the empty ones are spread through the room. Click Randomize seats again for a new draw, then swap anyone you want to move.
Can I leave desks empty?
Yes. Fill seats leaves extra desks blank at the back of the room. Randomize seats scatters those empty desks. You can also move a student onto an empty desk by clicking the student and then the empty desk.
What if I have more students than desks?
The chart does not drop names. It tells you how many desks you are short, and the current arrangement stays put. Add a row or a column, up to 8 of each, or remove names, then fill again.
How do I swap two students?
Click the first desk, then the second. Their seats trade. Click the same desk again, or press Escape, to cancel the selection. Filling or randomizing replaces the whole chart.
How do I print or save a PDF?
Click Print. A simple page opens with the title and the desks, then the browser print dialog. Choose Save as PDF in that dialog if you want a file. Pop-ups have to be allowed for the print window to open.
Can I print a blank classroom seating chart template?
Yes. Set the rows and columns, click Clear seats, and then click Print. You get the desk grid with blank seats so you can write names in by hand.
Does this arrange wedding or banquet tables?
This tool is for classrooms. It draws rows of desks with a front of the room and a class list. It does not seat guests at round tables.
