Numbers in word form
Word form is the same number written in English words. American English reads digits in groups of three, from the right: thousands, then millions, billions, and trillions. 1,234 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four. 101 is one hundred one, with no and in the middle. 1,000,000 is one million, and 1,000,000,000 is one billion. The word for 0 is zero.
A negative whole number starts with the word negative, so -21 is negative twenty-one. In American English, a billion is a thousand million, and a trillion is a thousand billion.
Hyphens from twenty-one through ninety-nine
Hyphenate a compound from 21 through 99. 21 is twenty-one, 34 is thirty-four, and 99 is ninety-nine. A ten that lands on zero has no hyphen: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety. Do not hyphenate the hundreds. 100 is one hundred, and 101 is one hundred one.
The same hyphen stays inside a larger number, so 1,234 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four. American English does not insert and inside a whole number. The word and is saved for a check, where it sits immediately before the cents.
A check amount in words with cents
On a US check, the small box gets the digits and the long line gets the words. Write the dollars in words, then and, then the cents as a fraction over 100. 1234.56 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100. 20.50 is twenty and 50/100. A whole dollar amount still names the cents, so 20 is twenty and 00/100. Five cents is zero and 05/100.
The line here is lowercase, and it stops before the word dollars, because most checks already print dollars at the end of the line. Use at most two decimal places so the cents stay exact. A negative amount is not a valid check.
