This time to decimal calculator turns hours, minutes, and seconds into decimal hours, decimal minutes, and total seconds, and shows the working, such as 1 h 45 min = 1 + 45/60 = 1.75 hours. The decimal to time mode turns decimal hours such as 7.5 back into 7:30:00. The conversion chart lists every minute from 1 to 60 as decimal hours.

How to convert time to decimal?

An hour has 60 minutes, so to convert time to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. 1 hour 45 minutes is 1 + 45/60, and 45/60 is 0.75, so 1 hour 45 minutes in decimal is 1.75 hours. Seconds work the same way with 3600, the number of seconds in an hour: 45 minutes 30 seconds is 45/60 + 30/3600, which is about 0.7583 hours.

Some times do not stop neatly after two decimal places. 2 hours 20 minutes is 2 + 20/60, and 20/60 is 0.3333 with the 3 repeating, so the calculator shows 2.33 hours and gives 2.3333 as well. Use the 2 decimal place value for a timesheet, and the longer one when you need to multiply it by something large, such as an hourly rate across a whole term.

Hours and minutes to decimal, step by step

Enter the hours and minutes in the time to decimal tab. Seconds are optional, so leave that box empty when you only have hours and minutes. The results update as you type: decimal hours is the main answer, decimal minutes is the whole time counted in minutes, and total seconds is the whole time counted in seconds. The line under the results shows the sum the calculator did, so a student can check it by hand.

The minutes box accepts more than 59. 90 minutes with 0 hours gives 1.5 hours, the same as 1 hour 30 minutes. This is handy when a lesson plan lists everything in minutes and the timesheet asks for hours.

How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?

Decimal to time runs the other way. Keep the whole number as the hours, then multiply the part after the decimal point by 60 to get the minutes. 7.5 hours is 7 hours plus 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes, so 7.5 hours is 7:30:00. 0.75 hours is 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.

If the minutes come out with a decimal part, multiply that part by 60 again to get the seconds. The decimal to time calculator rounds to the nearest second, so 2.3333 hours shows as 2:20:00 instead of 2:19:59.88.

Time to decimal conversion chart

The chart under the calculator lists every minute from 1 to 60 as decimal hours, rounded to 2 decimal places. Read across from the minutes to the hours: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50, and 45 minutes is 0.75. For a time with whole hours, add the hours in front: 5 hours and 45 minutes as a decimal is 5.75, and 8 hours and 15 minutes in decimals is 8.25.

Rounded values can add up to slightly more or less than the true total. Three blocks of 20 minutes are 0.33 each on the chart, which adds up to 0.99, while the true total is exactly 1 hour. Add the minutes first and convert once at the end to avoid this.
