Syria Flag Description
The flag of Syria consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white, and black colors, with two green stars in the center of the white stripe. The flag’s aspect ratio is 2:3.
The flag’s design is inspired by the Arab Liberation Flag, which was used during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. The Arab Liberation Flag was designed by the Syrian poet and independence activist, Ibrahim Hanano, and was first hoisted in 1917 during the Arab Revolt.
After gaining independence from France in 1946, Syria adopted a modified version of the Arab Liberation Flag as its national flag. The original design had three horizontal stripes of red, white, and black, representing the Hashemite dynasty, the Umayyad Caliphate, and the Abbasid Caliphate, respectively. However, in 1958, Syria merged with Egypt to form the United Arab Republic (UAR), and the flag was changed to reflect the union. The UAR flag had two green stars added to the white stripe, symbolizing the union between Syria and Egypt.
The union between Syria and Egypt dissolved in 1961, and Syria reverted to its original flag design. The two green stars were retained as a symbol of the unity between the two countries during the UAR period. The red color represents the sacrifices made by the Syrian people, the white symbolizes peace, and the black represents the dark days of oppression.
The flag has remained unchanged since 1980 when the current Syrian constitution was adopted. It is a symbol of national pride and unity for the Syrian people. However, during the ongoing Syrian Civil War, various opposition groups have used modified versions of the flag to represent their respective factions.
