Belarus Flag Description

The flag of Belarus consists of a horizontal stripe of red on the top, a narrower stripe of green in the middle, and another horizontal stripe of red on the bottom. In the upper hoist-side corner, there is a vertical stripe of white that extends to the middle of the flag. The flag has a ratio of 1:2, meaning that its width is twice its height.

The current design of the Belarusian flag was adopted on June 7, 1995. However, the colors and elements of the flag have a long history that dates back to the early 20th century. The red and green colors have been associated with Belarusian nationalism since the early 20th century, while the white stripe represents the traditional Belarusian culture and heritage.

During the Soviet era, Belarus was part of the Soviet Union and its flag consisted of a red field with the golden hammer and sickle emblem in the top hoist-side corner. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Belarus gained independence and the flag was changed to reflect the new national identity.

The current flag design was chosen through a national contest, and it represents the country’s desire for independence and national unity. The red color symbolizes bravery and courage, while the green color represents hope and fertility. The white stripe represents purity, honesty, and the traditional values of the Belarusian people.

The flag of Belarus has been a source of controversy and political tension within the country. The opposition movement in Belarus often uses a modified version of the flag, where the red and green stripes are reversed, to symbolize their resistance against the government. This alternative flag is known as the “Freedom Flag” and is often seen during protests and demonstrations.

Overall, the flag of Belarus is a powerful symbol of the country’s history, culture, and aspirations for independence. It represents the unity and resilience of the Belarusian people, while also serving as a reminder of the ongoing political struggles within the country.
