Sudan Flag Description
The flag of Sudan consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width. The top stripe is red, the middle stripe is white, and the bottom stripe is black. In the center of the white stripe, there is a green triangle pointing towards the hoist side of the flag. Inside the green triangle, there is a golden yellow five-pointed star.
The flag of Sudan has undergone several changes throughout its history. The first flag of Sudan was adopted in 1956 when the country gained independence from joint British and Egyptian rule. It featured three horizontal stripes of blue, yellow, and green, with a red triangle on the hoist side. Inside the red triangle, there was a golden yellow star and a crescent.
In 1970, the flag was changed to the current design, which is known as the “Flag of the May Revolution.” This change was made after a military coup led by Colonel Gaafar Nimeiry, who wanted to distance Sudan from its Arab identity and align it more closely with Africa. The red color represents the bloodshed during the struggle for independence, the white symbolizes peace, the black represents Sudan’s African heritage, and the green triangle represents agriculture and prosperity. The golden yellow star inside the triangle represents the unity of the Sudanese people.
The flag of Sudan has remained unchanged since 1970, even after the country went through a secession process in 2011, resulting in the creation of South Sudan as an independent nation. Despite the split, Sudan decided to keep the same flag as a symbol of continuity and unity.
