6 fun facts about the donut
The hole in a donut is not just for looks — it lets the middle cook through instead of staying doughy.
An American sailor named Hanson Gregory said he invented the ring shape in 1847, when he was only 16 years old.
There are two main kinds of donut: cake donuts, made from batter, and yeast donuts, made from risen dough that puffs up light and fluffy.
A French cruller is made from the same airy dough as an éclair, which is why it has all those twisted ridges.
Japanese mochi donuts are made with rice flour and come as a ring of little balls you can pull apart one at a time.
The biggest donut ever made was a jelly donut in New York in 1993 — it was 16 feet wide and weighed as much as two cars.
