The flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Kinshasa, is a tricolor flag consisting of a sky blue stripe at the top, a red stripe in the middle, and a vibrant yellow stripe at the bottom. The flag has a width-to-length ratio of 3:2.
The current flag was adopted on February 20, 2006, following a nationwide contest to design a new flag. The winning design was created by a Congolese artist named Ne Muanda Nsemi. It replaced the previous flag, which had been in use since the country gained independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960.

This flag was used from 1908 until 1960 when the country gained independence.
After independence, the country adopted a new flag that consisted of a sky blue field with a yellow star in the upper hoist corner and a yellow diagonal stripe running from the lower hoist corner to the upper fly corner. This flag was used from 1960 until 1963 when the country was renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In 1963, the flag was modified to its current tricolor design, with the sky blue, red, and yellow stripes. However, during the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko from 1971 to 1997, the flag was altered to include a green field with a yellow circle in the upper hoist corner. This modification was made to reflect Mobutu’s political ideology and was known as the “Zaireanization” of the flag. The flag was changed back to its original tricolor design after Mobutu’s regime ended in 1997.
