How each count is worked out
Words are counted by splitting the text on spaces, tabs and line breaks, which is the same rule most teachers and word processors use. A hyphenated word like well-known counts as one. A number or a stray symbol surrounded by spaces counts as one word too.
The character counter reports every character in the box, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks. The second figure, No Spaces, strips out all whitespace, which is the number you usually want for a social post or a form with a strict character limit. Sentences are found by counting full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so an abbreviation such as Dr. or e.g. will push the sentence count up by one. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line, and Lines counts every line break, including the empty ones.
Who tends to use it
Students checking an essay against a word limit before submitting it, and teachers checking a piece of writing without opening a word processor. A 500-word writing task is easy to eyeball on screen and easy to get wrong by eighty words.
It is also handy outside school work: trimming a meta description to 155 characters, keeping a bio inside a profile limit, checking a newsletter draft, or seeing whether a paragraph has quietly grown to twelve lines. Anything you can select and copy can be dropped in.
Your text stays on your machine
All the counting happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, so you can paste an unpublished draft, a student's work or an internal document without it leaving the device. Closing or refreshing the tab clears everything.

How many words is this?

Does the character count include spaces?
Both versions are shown. Characters counts everything, spaces and punctuation included. No Spaces gives the same text with all whitespace removed, which is the figure most character limits on forms and social platforms are based on.
How many pages is 1000 words?
Roughly four pages double-spaced or two pages single-spaced, using 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins. Font, spacing and margins move that a fair amount, so treat it as an estimate rather than a promise.
How many words are in a paragraph?
Most writing guides land on 100 to 200 words, or three to five sentences. School paragraphs are often shorter. The paragraph and sentence counters here let you check how your own draft compares.
Why is the sentence count higher than I expected?
Sentences are split on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations, decimals and initials each register as a sentence ending. Text with lots of them will read a little high.
Is this word counter free?

Is my text saved anywhere?
