Turning your own sentences into a scramble worksheet

Type or paste your sentences into the box, one per line, and the sentence scramble generator shuffles the words in each one into a random order. Nothing is invented for you unless you ask for it, so the scrambled sentences come straight from your spelling list, your reading book, or the grammar pattern you taught this morning. The counter above the box shows how many lines it found, which is a quick way to catch a stray blank line or two sentences accidentally typed on the same row.

Each word stays intact when it is shuffled. Only the order changes, so a child unscrambling the sentence is working on word order and syntax rather than spelling. The shuffle also checks its own work: if the random order happens to come out identical to the original, it tries again, so you should not end up with a sentence that is already solved on the page.

Easy, medium and hard sample sentences

If you do not have sentences ready, the difficulty buttons load a set of samples for you. Easy gives short sentences of about three to five words, such as the cat is sleeping, which suits Reception and Year 1 or kindergarten and first grade. Medium sits around six to eight words and works well in Years 2 to 4. Hard uses nine or more words with subordinate clauses, adverbs and commas, which stretches upper primary and middle school readers.

The difficulty setting only chooses which samples get loaded into the box. Once they are there you can edit them freely, delete the ones that do not fit, or mix a few of your own in with them. Many teachers load the medium samples, keep two, and type six sentences of their own underneath to match the week's topic.

Capitals, punctuation and how hard the puzzle gets

A capital letter and a full stop are enormous clues. A child who spots them can place the first and last words without reading anything else. Two checkboxes let you take those clues away: remove capitals lowercases every word, including the one that started the sentence, and remove punctuation strips full stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, semicolons, colons, apostrophes and quotation marks from the word cards.

Leave both switched on for beginners, who need the scaffolding while they are still learning what a sentence looks like. Turn them off once children are confident, and the same unscramble sentences task suddenly demands real attention to grammar and meaning. It is a useful way to reuse one set of sentences across two ability groups without writing anything twice.

The writing line checkbox adds a ruled line under each set of word cards so children can copy out the finished sentence by hand. That extra step is where the learning sticks, because they have to reproduce the capital letter and the full stop themselves rather than just pointing at the right order.

Printing, answer keys and saving a copy

Five colour themes are available: classic grey, ocean, forest, sunset and lavender. The theme colours the word cards and their borders, which helps children see each word as a separate movable tile rather than a run of text. Colour printing is optional; the cards still read clearly in black and white because the borders carry the shape.

Ways to use scrambled sentences in class

Sentence scramble worksheets earn their place because they teach word order in a way a worksheet of gap fills cannot. For early readers, keep sentences under six words and let children cut the cards out and physically move them before they write. For older pupils, use sentences from the class novel so unscrambling doubles as a comprehension check.

They also work well for English language learners, where word order in a new language rarely matches the first one. Build a set around a single structure, such as questions or past tense sentences, and the repetition does the teaching. Grammar lessons, morning starters, homework, spelling sentence practice and early finisher activities all take the same printout with no extra preparation.
