Random Date Generator
Free random date generator for any year range, plus a birthday generator for a month and day or a full birth date. Copy long, ISO, or US dates.
Set the years and click Generate for a random date.
6,940 days from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2026. 5 of those days are February 29.
February 29 is drawn only when that year is a leap year: divisible by 4, except century years, which have to be divisible by 400. 2000 qualifies. 1900 does not.
The Random Date Generator draws real calendar dates between a start year and an end year. The boxes open at the current year and reach back 18 years before the fall the school year began, a span that includes the birth years of K-12 students this school year. Ask for one date or a list of up to 100, leave duplicates out, and copy the results as March 14, 2008, as 2008-03-14, or as 03/14/2008. A second mode is a random birthday generator: month and day only, for a class chart that can stand in for real student birthdays, or a full birth date in the same year range, with weekday and age. February 29 appears only in leap years when a year is included, and only rarely in month-and-day mode.
Pick a random date between two years
The random date generator draws a real calendar day from January 1 of the start year through December 31 of the end year. Every valid day in that span has the same chance. February keeps 28 days, or 29 in a leap year, and April, June, September, and November stop at 30.
The year boxes open at the current year and reach back 18 years before the fall the school year began, 2008 to 2026 in the fall of 2026. That span includes the birth years of students in kindergarten through 12th grade this year and continues through the present, so the first result is a date a class will recognize. Replace either year with any whole number from 1 to 9999 when you need a colonial date, a 19th-century setting, or a batch of modern records.
How many dates, and the format you copy?
How many accepts 1 through 100. One date fills the panel as a calendar page, with the month on the header, the day in large type, and the copyable line along the bottom. A longer draw becomes a numbered list. No duplicates is on by default, so a list of 30 is 30 different days. Turn it off when you want each draw independent, the way repeated dice rolls can land on the same face twice.
Format controls the line Copy places on the clipboard. March 14, 2008 is the long form, the one to put on a worksheet. 2008-03-14 is the ISO form, which sorts correctly in a spreadsheet and pastes cleanly into code. 03/14/2008 is the numeric US form. Copy takes those date lines only, one per line. The weekday, and the age on a full birthday, stay on the screen so an ISO paste remains a plain date. List in calendar order rearranges the same draw from earliest to latest. Changing the format updates the lines already on screen.
A random birthday generator, with or without the year
Random birthday, then Month and day, returns something like March 14 with no year and no age. That is the setting for a class birthday chart, a graph of months, or a party game. Use it in place of real student birthdays on a slide or a bulletin board, so the lesson does not need anyone's actual birth date.
Full birth date uses the same start and end years and returns a complete birthday, such as March 14, 2008, plus the weekday and the age in years as of today. Narrow the years to the group you are inventing. A fourth-grade class in the fall is mostly about nine years old, so birth years nine and ten years before that fall land in the right band, such as 2016 to 2017 in the fall of 2026. A date that is still in the future is marked Still to come instead of being given an age.
February 29 only when the calendar allows it
When a year is part of the result, February 29 is an ordinary day inside leap years and is absent from every other year. A leap year is divisible by 4, except a century year, which is a leap year only when it is also divisible by 400. 2000 is a leap year. 1900 is not, so February 29, 1900 never comes up. From 2008 through 2026, for example, the leap days are February 29 of 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024: five days out of 6,940. The line under the year boxes counts the days and the leap days for whatever range you set.
Month-and-day mode has no year to test, so February 29 cannot be accepted or rejected on the leap-year rule. It stays in the pool, and the note under the options says so. It is drawn at the Gregorian rate: 97 times in every 400-year cycle of 146,097 days, about 1 draw in 1,506. A batch of ten month-and-day birthdays will usually contain none. The same leap rule is applied to every year the tool accepts, including years before 1582, so the results stay consistent even though countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times. A February 29 result is labeled Leap day. For age, that birthday counts as reached on March 1 in a common year.
Classroom lists, timelines, and placeholder records
Teachers use the date draw for timeline practice, elapsed-time problems, and writing prompts that start from a specific day. The birthday draw fills a month graph or a seating-chart exercise without collecting birth dates from the class. The generator makes the choice, so a student does not have to share a real birthday for the lesson to work.
The same lists work as placeholder dates of birth for a form demo, sample rows in a spreadsheet, and story dates that have to be valid. The random date generator runs in the browser. Nothing is saved to an account or sent to a server. Copy the list before you close the tab if you still need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the random date generator actually random?
Yes. Each draw uses the browser's random number generator. In date mode, and for a full birth date, every real calendar day in the year range has an equal chance. Month-and-day birthdays use the same generator, with February 29 weighted so it stays rare.
Which years can I choose?
Any whole year from 1 through 9999. The start year has to be the same as the end year or earlier. The default runs from 18 years before the fall the school year began through the current year, which includes K-12 birth years for this school year. A single year, such as 1776 to 1776, limits the draw to that year.
Can I generate several dates with no repeats?
Yes. Set How many anywhere from 1 to 100 and leave No duplicates on. A one-year range still has 365 or 366 days, so a list of 100 from a single year does not repeat. Turn No duplicates off if you want each date drawn separately, which allows the same day more than once.
What formats can I copy?
Three. The long form is March 14, 2008. The ISO form is 2008-03-14. The numeric US form is 03/14/2008. Month-and-day results drop the year, so those formats become March 14, 03-14, and 03/14. Copy places the current list on your clipboard, one date per line, in the format on screen. Weekday and age are not included in the copy.
How is the birthday generator different from a random date?
Random date always includes a year and is meant for any day in a range. The random birthday generator adds a month-and-day choice with no year. When you ask for a full birth date, it also shows the weekday and the age in years as of today.
Can I get a birthday that is only a month and a day?
Yes. Choose Random birthday, then Month and day. The result looks like March 14, with no year and no age, which is what you want for a class chart or a graph of birthday months.
Will February 29 ever appear?
With a year attached, February 29 appears only in leap years, and only as often as those leap days occur in your range. 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, so February 29 is impossible in either one. In month-and-day mode, February 29 is included at about 1 in 1,506 draws, matching 97 leap days across 146,097 days in the Gregorian cycle. Those results are marked Leap day. A February 29 birthday turns a year older on March 1 when the current year is not a leap year.
Do I need an account, and are the dates stored?
No account and no download. The random date generator and the birthday generator both run in the browser on a phone, tablet, or computer. Nothing you generate is saved, so copy the list if you need to keep it.
