Metric Conversion Chart
A printable metric conversion chart of multiply-by factors for length, mass, and volume, with a one-value lookup from the same factors.
The measurement you already know
Multiply by
2.54
With your amount
12 in × 2.54 = 30.48 cm
Result
When you know a measurement, multiply by the factor to find the other unit. A factor marked ≈ is rounded to 6 significant figures. The amount row uses the exact factor, then rounds its own display the same way.
Length
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters exactly.

This metric conversion chart is a printable measurement conversion chart for length, mass, and volume, with U.S. customary units and metric units in one conversion table. Both directions are listed, metric to standard and standard to metric. Each row is a multiply-by factor: the unit you know, the number to multiply by, and the unit you find. Length runs through millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, and miles. Mass runs through milligrams, grams, kilograms, ounces, and pounds. Volume runs through milliliters, liters, cups, pints, quarts, and the U.S. liquid gallon. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 12 inches is 30.48 cm. A pound is exactly 453.59237 g, and a U.S. gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L. A factor that does not land on a short exact decimal is rounded to six significant figures and marked ≈. One amount, a from unit, and a to unit use those same definitions, and Print chart sends the tables to the printer.
Multiply by the factor in the row
The metric conversion chart is a conversion table for length, mass, and volume. Each row lists the unit you know, the factor to multiply by, and the unit that product is in. Length includes millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, and miles. Mass includes milligrams, grams, kilograms, ounces, and pounds. Volume includes milliliters, liters, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Metric steps such as 1 meter × 100 = 100 centimeters sit next to U.S. customary steps such as 1 foot × 12 = 12 inches, and next to the factors that cross the two systems. An inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, so 12 inches × 2.54 = 30.48 centimeters. A pound is exactly 453.59237 grams, and a U.S. liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters.
The row above the tables takes one amount, a from unit, and a to unit in that same quantity, and multiplies by the factor for the pair. When the factor is a short exact decimal, the line shows the multiplication, as with 12 in × 2.54 = 30.48 cm. A factor marked ≈ is rounded to six significant figures for the chart, which is how a repeating factor such as centimeters to inches (about 0.393701) fits on one line. The one-value result still uses the exact definition, and the result shows ≈ when that display is rounded to six significant figures. Print chart opens a print view of the three tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the multiply-by column?
Find the unit you already have under When you know, multiply your measurement by the factor, and read the unit under To find. 1 kilometer × 1,000 = 1,000 meters. The amount row above the chart does that multiplication for any pair of units in the same table.
How many centimeters are in 12 inches?
12 inches × 2.54 = 30.48 centimeters. The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, so this product is exact and the chart leaves off the ≈ mark. One foot is 30.48 centimeters, which is the same 12 × 2.54.
Why do some factors have a ≈ sign?
≈ means the printed factor is rounded to six significant figures. Centimeters to inches is about 0.393701 because 1 ÷ 2.54 does not end. Grams to ounces is about 0.0352740. The one-value line multiplies by the exact factor from the definitions on the chart. 127 centimeters is 50 inches exactly, even though the per-centimeter factor is rounded on the table.
Which gallon, cup, and ounce are these?
The gallon is the U.S. liquid gallon, exactly 3.785411784 liters, the volume of 231 cubic inches. A quart is 1/4 gallon, a pint is 1/8 gallon, and a cup is 1/16 gallon. The ounce and the pound are avoirdupois, and 1 pound is exactly 453.59237 grams, so 1 ounce is 28.349523125 grams.
