South Sudan Flag Description

The Second Sudanese Civil War, which lasted until 2005, was one of the longest and deadliest conflicts in Africa. It resulted in the deaths of millions of people and the displacement of millions more. The southern rebels, led by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), fought for independence and self-determination. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005 between the Sudanese government and the SPLM/A paved the way for a referendum on independence for South Sudan.
On January 9, 2011, the people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly in favor of secession from Sudan, leading to the establishment of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9, 2011. The flag of South Sudan was hoisted for the first time during the independence ceremony, symbolizing the country’s new beginning and aspirations for peace, prosperity, and unity.
