Work Hours Calculator
Add up hours worked for a week from start times, end times, and breaks, with optional gross pay and overtime.
Total hours this week
0.00 decimal hours
This work hours calculator is a weekly timesheet calculator. Enter a start time, an end time, and break minutes for each day from Monday to Sunday, and it works out the hours worked for every day and the weekly total, shown both as hours and minutes and as decimal hours. A shift that ends after midnight is counted into the next morning. Add an hourly rate to see gross pay for the week, with hours over 40 split out as overtime at 1.5 times the rate.
A weekly timesheet calculator with breaks
Each day from Monday to Sunday has a start time, an end time, and a break in minutes. The hours worked for that day are the end time minus the start time minus the break, shown as hours and minutes. A day left empty counts as zero, so a four-day week only needs four rows filled in.
The weekly total appears in two forms. Hours and minutes, such as 37:30, is what a time card shows. Decimal hours, such as 37.50, is what most payroll forms ask for. Both update as soon as you change any time or break.
How do you calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then take away the unpaid break. A shift from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a 30-minute lunch it is 7 hours 30 minutes, which is 7.50 decimal hours. Five of those days make a 37.5-hour week.
To turn minutes into decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes is 0.50 of an hour, 15 minutes is 0.25, and 45 minutes is 0.75. That is why 7 hours 30 minutes and 7.50 hours are the same amount of time.
Shifts that cross midnight
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end as the next morning. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours, not a negative number. The hours are counted on the day the shift started.
The same start and end time counts as 0 hours, not 24. A single shift longer than 24 hours cannot be entered in one row.
Gross pay and overtime
Add an hourly rate and the calculator shows gross pay for the week: total hours times the rate, before tax and other deductions. At 18.00 an hour, a 37.5-hour week is 675.00.
Under the US federal rule, most hourly workers earn overtime at 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. When the total goes past 40 hours, the result splits the pay into 40 regular hours and the overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate. Some states and contracts count overtime by the day or at other rates, so check your own rules before using the figure for payroll.
Using it in class
A timesheet is a practical way to practice elapsed time, converting minutes to decimals, and multiplying money. Students can fill in a part-time job schedule, predict the weekly hours, and check the answer. The overtime split turns a word problem about time-and-a-half into numbers they can see.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this work hours calculator?
Enter a start time and an end time for each day you worked, and the break minutes if the break was unpaid. The hours for each day and the weekly total appear straight away. Leave days you did not work empty.
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract the lunch break. 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours minus 30 minutes, which is 7 hours 30 minutes or 7.50 hours.
Why are there two totals?
37:30 means 37 hours and 30 minutes, the way a time card shows it. 37.50 is the same time in decimal hours, the way payroll hours are usually entered. Reading 37:30 as 37.3 hours is a common mistake that underpays by 12 minutes.
What if a shift goes past midnight?
Put the real start and end times in the same row. When the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it into the next morning, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours.
How is overtime worked out?
Hours over 40 in the week are paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate, which is the US federal overtime rule for most hourly jobs. A 45-hour week at 20.00 an hour is 40 hours at 20.00 plus 5 hours at 30.00, which is 950.00.
Is the gross pay what I take home?
No. Gross pay is hours times the rate before tax, insurance, and other deductions. Take-home pay is lower.
Can I use this as a time card calculator for a whole week?
Yes. It holds one start time, one end time, and one break for each day from Monday to Sunday. For a split shift on the same day, add the two parts together yourself or count the gap between them as a break.
