The Random Name Picker is a fair and fun way to make random selections from any list. Teachers use it to call on students for participation, coaches use it for team selection, and groups use it for deciding who goes first or assigning tasks. Simply enter your list of names (one per line), and the tool will randomly select one or more entries. Every name has an equal chance of being picked, ensuring completely fair and unbiased selection.
Paste a class list and pick a name in two clicks
The box on the left takes one name per line. Paste a register straight out of a spreadsheet, type a table group, or drop in the ten sample names if you just want to see how it behaves. The label above the box counts the lines as you go, so you can check that all 28 children made it in without counting heads on screen.
Press Pick Random and the display flicks through the list for about two seconds before settling on one name in large type. The shuffle is there so the room can see something is happening; the winner is drawn fresh at the end, not whichever name the animation happened to stop on. It works the same as a spinning wheel spinner, minus the wheel, which means it loads instantly and reads clearly from the back of a classroom.
How the draw stays fair
Every pick is an independent draw across the whole list, so each name has exactly the same chance every single time. Nothing is weighted, nothing is remembered between picks, and a name that came up last lesson is no less likely to come up again. That is what makes a random name selector fairer than going round the register alphabetically, where the same few children at the top get asked first all year.
Because each pick is independent, the same name genuinely can come up twice in a row. That is not a bug in the randomizer, it is what random looks like over a short run. If you want a true no-repeats draw, remove each name once it has been picked.
Taking names out as you go
The Current List panel on the right mirrors whatever is in the text box, with a small bin icon beside each entry. Clicking it removes that name from the list and from the text box at the same time, which is the quickest way to run a draw where nobody gets picked twice: pick, remove, pick again.
The name that was just chosen is highlighted in the list, so it is easy to spot and delete without hunting through 30 rows. Removing a name is not permanent in any scary sense either. Nothing is saved anywhere, so if you delete the wrong child you can type the name back in, and reloading the page gives you an empty list to start over.
Keeping track of who has already been picked
Once you have made a pick, a Selection History strip appears underneath showing the last ten results, numbered with the most recent first. It is useful mid-lesson when a child insists they have not had a turn, and for raffle or prize draws where you need to read the winners back out in order. Clear wipes it when you move on to the next group.
The history is only ever ten entries deep and it lives in the page, not in an account, so copy anything you need to keep before you close the tab.
What teachers and groups use it for
Cold calling is the obvious one: a random name picker takes the sting out of being chosen because the choice is visibly not yours. It is also good for handing out classroom jobs, deciding reading order, picking who demonstrates at the board, and settling which team goes first without a coin.
Outside the classroom the same list works for staff meeting icebreakers, allocating chores at home, choosing a raffle winner from ticket holders, or picking a restaurant when nobody will commit. Anything you can write one per line, the tool will choose between. For small children, typing their own name in before the draw is half the fun, and it doubles as quiet handwriting-free keyboard practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the name picker really random?
Yes. Each pick draws from the full list with equal probability for every name, using the browser's built-in random number generator. No name is weighted or excluded unless you remove it yourself.
Can the same name be picked twice in a row?
It can, because every draw is independent of the last. If you need each name to come up only once, click the bin icon next to a name after it is picked to take it out of the list.
How many names can I add?
There is no set limit. Paste as many lines as you like; the list panel scrolls and the counter above the text box tells you how many names it read. Anything from two names to a full year group works.
Does it save my class list?
No. Everything stays in the page and disappears when you refresh or close the tab, so nothing about your pupils is stored or sent anywhere. Keep the list in a document and paste it in each time.
Can I pick more than one name at once?
Each press picks a single name. To choose a group, pick a name, remove it with the bin icon, then pick again until you have as many as you need.
Is this the same as a spin the wheel name picker?
It does the same job. Instead of drawing a wheel it flicks through the names for a couple of seconds and then shows the result in large type, which loads faster and is easier to read on a projector or interactive whiteboard.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. The random name selector runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, with no account, download or cost.
How do I start a fresh draw?
Select everything in the names box and delete it, or reload the page. Clear under the Selection History wipes the list of past winners separately.
