The Cursive Handwriting Generator creates elegant practice worksheets using authentic cursive script fonts. Choose from custom text, individual cursive letters (uppercase or lowercase), or pangrams that include every letter of the alphabet. What goes on the page
Start by picking what to practise. Custom Text takes anything up to 50 characters, which is enough for a name, a spelling word, or a short cursive practice sentence. A-Z Uppercase, a-z Lowercase and Both Cases turn the whole alphabet into a set of practice blocks, one letter at a time, so a cursive alphabet worksheet is two clicks rather than a morning of typing. Pangram drops in one of four sentences that use every letter of the alphabet, including the old favourite about the quick brown fox.
Each piece of text gets its own block: an example line written in full-strength script, then however many tracing lines you asked for. Practice Lines goes from 2 to 6. With Custom Text and Pangram you can also force the case with Original, ABC, abc or Abc, which is handy when a child needs to drill lowercase joins without capitals getting in the way. The case buttons are hidden for the alphabet modes, since those already control their own casing.
Turn off Show example line if a pupil is ready to write unaided, and the block becomes pure tracing lines. Turn it off together with a small letter size and you have a cursive writing sheet that is closer to a test than a warm-up.
Tracing styles and letter sizes
Three tracing styles change how the grey letters underneath look. Dotted Outline gives the familiar dot-to-dot letterform that most classrooms use for cursive tracing. Dashed Outline is slightly bolder and easier for a child who is losing the thread of a long word. Light Gray fills the letter in pale solid script, which is the gentlest of the three and the one that photocopies most reliably.
Letter Size has three settings and they matter more than people expect. Large is 56px and is labelled for beginners, because a bigger letter forgives a shaky grip and gives the wrist room to make the loops. Medium at 42px suits a child who has the letterforms but is still slow. Small at 34px is close to real writing size and fits longer text on a line, so it is the right choice once joins are automatic. If a word runs off the edge of the sheet, drop a size before shortening the text.
The guide lines are the standard three: a dashed top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. Unticking Show guide lines leaves only the solid baseline, which is a useful step between ruled practice paper and a plain notebook. Five colour themes are available, Classic, Ocean, Forest, Sunset and Lavender. Classic is plain grey and uses the least ink.
Printing and saving your worksheet
Print Worksheet opens a clean print view with a 15mm margin on every side, so nothing lands in the unprintable strip at the edge of the paper. The page waits for the script font to load before the print dialog appears, which stops the worksheet printing in a plain fallback typeface. It sizes to whatever paper your printer is set to, so US Letter and A4 both work without fiddling.
The printed sheet carries the title you typed at the top, a one-line instruction, and Name and Date lines at the bottom for handing out to a class. If the grey tracing letters come out invisible, check that your print dialog has background graphics or colour printing switched on.
Download Image saves the preview as a PNG at double resolution. That version is the one to use if you want to drop the practice sheet into a slide, a newsletter, or a worksheet pack rather than print it directly. Everything runs in the browser and nothing is stored, so custom cursive worksheets with a child's name on them stay on your own machine.
Using it with children who are learning cursive
Most schools introduce cursive somewhere around Year 3 or second to third grade, once print letters are steady and the child can hold a pencil without a death grip. The usual order is loops and joins first, then lowercase letters grouped by shape, then capitals, then whole words. Making your own cursive worksheets lets you follow that order instead of whatever a printable pack happened to include.
For cursive name practice, type the child's first name into Custom Text, set the case to Abc and use Large with four practice lines. Names are the fastest win in handwriting because the child already cares about the result. Once the name is fluent, move to two or three word phrases, then to a full pangram or a short cursive paragraph at Medium size.
A few things worth watching while they write. Cursive is written with a slight forward slant and the pencil should stay on the paper through a whole word, lifting only for the dot on an i and the cross on a t, which are added at the end. Short daily sessions beat long ones, and five minutes on one sheet is plenty when they are starting out. If a letter keeps going wrong, generate a sheet with just that letter in Custom Text rather than running the whole alphabet again.
