The flag of Afghanistan is a tricolor flag consisting of three vertical stripes of black, red, and green. In 1973, following the overthrow of the monarchy, the Republic of Afghanistan was established, and a new flag was adopted. It featured a vertical tricolor design of black, red, and green, similar to the previous flag, but without the national emblem. This flag remained in use until 1992 when the communist government collapsed. During the Taliban regime from 1996 to 2001, the flag was changed to a solid white color with the Shahada (Islamic creed) written in black at the center. However, this flag was not widely recognized internationally. After the fall of the Taliban, the current flag design was reintroduced in 2002. It is a modified version of the 1928 design, with the addition of the national emblem in the center. The black stripe represents the dark past of Afghanistan, the red stripe symbolizes the bloodshed for independence, and the green stripe represents hope and prosperity for the future.
