Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag Description
The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of a blue background with a yellow triangle at the hoist side. Inside the triangle, there are seven white five-pointed stars arranged in an arc. The stars represent the seven historical regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosanska Krajina, Bosanska Posavina, Bosanski Podrinje, Bosanska Romanija, Bosanska Zupa, Hercegovina, and Srednja Bosna.
The flag was officially adopted on February 4, 1998, following the signing of the Dayton Agreement in 1995, which ended the Bosnian War. The flag was designed to represent the unity and diversity of the country, as well as its historical and cultural heritage.
The blue color of the flag symbolizes peace and stability, while the yellow triangle represents the shape of the country. The triangle is also a symbol of the three main ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs. The stars inside the triangle represent the unity and equality of these ethnic groups.
The design of the flag was chosen through a public competition held in 1998. The winning design was created by a Bosnian graphic designer named Abdulah Sidran. His design was selected out of more than 3000 entries.
Before the adoption of the current flag, Bosnia and Herzegovina used several different flags throughout its history. During the Ottoman Empire rule, the region used a green flag with a white crescent and star. Later, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire rule, a red flag with a yellow coat of arms was used.
During the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina used a red flag with a yellow-bordered red star in the top left corner. However, after the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian War, a new flag was needed to represent the newly independent country.
The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is an important symbol of national identity and unity. It represents the country’s complex history, diverse population, and its aspirations for peace and stability.
